I liked Inception (it's alot like The Matrix, which I also liked). I wasn't thrilled with Adjustment Bureau, kind of a flashy remake of Dark City. The Sixth Day is one of my favorites. The X-Men series and The Highlander series (Renegade Version of Highlander II is far better than the original cut) and Starfighter are all good; not sure if they can all be considered Sci-fi.

I have not yet seen The Adjustment Bureau or Inception, but I'm told both are quite good, too. Indeed, the estate of Phillip K. Dick is suing the makers of the The Adjustment Bureau for some sort of breach of contract- it's based on a short story of Mr. Dick's, and he's one of favorite SF writers. Short Stories he's written have gone on to become Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report.

Err,,,, neither Lord of the Rings nor The Hobbit is science fiction. They are adventure fantasy.

For me, if you set aside the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises and focus on the stand alone movies, I'd have to say my favorites are:
2001: A Space Odyssey Close Encounters of the Third Kind Blade Runner The Island Minority Report
