GM cancels Opel sale

BBC News -- General Motors (GM) has announced it has cancelled plans to sell its European car business Opel, including its UK brand Vauxhall.

The US giant said in a statement that its board had made the decision because of "an improving business environment for GM over the past few months".

Ford taking over part of GM would never work.

They them here, they just give them other names. It's good old General Motors badge engineering. They've done it, sometimes to the detriment of the product, for at least 33 years.

Considering the fact that GM Europe has the smaller more economical cars I wonder how smart it would be to get rid of that technology. They have the diesels also. Silly GM.

Look what dividing us the telephone industry did for competition and service. GM could learn a lesson and not wait for Obama to tell them. Of course, he's got no experience at running a for profit company so he'll have to make use of some of his czars.

How many OPEL's are sold in the US? Ford is still doing the best of all as of today's reports. All this with no government help. The Unions should notice this and go along with the changes that will help them make a profit and stay in business, not because they are making profit. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

Things change fast in the business world. They just traded chief executives between the Opel branch and the Volt branch. So something had to be up...

The UAW has got NOTHING at all to do with this decision, i love how you all want to keep blaming the workforce for all these problems, its the inept management in the Ren Center in Detroit who makes the decisions, not the unions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Government Motors needs to change its structure so that it will NEVER fail again. But alas they also need to suffer some pains as well, because they shoved it down our throats with poorly made automobiles that thrashly buily, while being ecomical for us buyers. And know they will NOT starting telling us that we have to fork out at las $40,000 for a base model from them!

If the jobs don't come back soon, you can kiss many more car companies good bye and there will be no to buy them either. If its not made in Korea or China, it will be too expensive for most people.

Very odd that there is now no mention of the Russian backing that Magna was depending on for the Opel and Vauxhall purchase from GM. That certainly made for great bedfellows with the German govt.!!!

It must have gone though the Obama approval. I heard a tradesman talking about getting his boss to replace broken tools tonight. They spent money going through manager after manager to approve buying a few allen wrenches and a crescent. It got back to a inept front line supervisor and he threw that whole thing in the trash. The wrenches probably didn't amount to $20. This inept boss in the past has routinely shorted his employees paychecks. He is still here.

I kept looking at GM and finding things I didn't like.

First really good vehicle I owned was a Toyota.

Now, GM has Ed Whitacre as chairman. Still won't make me buy his cars but I have about everything that AT&T can sell you in Houston.

It won't happen.

I've seen unions decertified in at least three cases but in one case the unionized employees wanted something that was given to all nonrepresented employees.

I've also seen all the tooling being yanked out of a plant during a strike causing the union to try to return to jobs that no longer existed.

Sold at Buick dealers as a captive import. Before they totally dropped the brand in the US market, they were rebadging Isuzus.

Then you know very little about General Motors. In the United Kingdom, GM uses the Vauxhall brand. GM says they're cutting back from eight brands to four but that's in the North American market. Holden (GM's brand in Australia) was kept off the block as it's a solid performer.

I'm glad to see that a potential stronghold overseas held by an American company will not be "sold off for parts."

Those who havne't heard of Opel or Vauxhall probably haven't heard of Citroen, Renault, Spyker, Peugeot, or Holden for that matter either. Just because the car wasn't offered in America doesn't mean the company doesn't exist or make a worthwhile vehicle.
