Gas prices up just in time for long weekend
Thursday, August 28, 2008
CTV.ca -- Drivers looking to fill up their tanks got a shock Wednesday morning after gas prices crept up by three cents overnight.

After sitting at close to $1.24 per litre for several days, the average gas price is now $1.27 per litre, just in time for the Labour Day Weekend.

Experts blame tropical storm Gustav, which has ravaged Haiti and the Dominican Republic and is now headed to the oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico.

I have not seen any change in gas prices due to the fact that Gustav is going into the Gulf. The prices are holding pretty steady so far for the Labor Day weekend. I'm sure they are going to go up, due to the fact they pulled all the workers from the platforms. Lets hope they can return as soon as possible and there is no damage to any platforms. At least the storm is not as bad as they expected. I'm down south in Miami.

Prices are up here by 10 - 20 cents in many stations. But many are still at the lowest (by recent standards). Maybe the difference is as simple as some want immediate profit, while some are thinking long term profit by building the confidence of a regular clientele who will return and be 'regulars'.

When wind and sun, bio-fuels and geothermal, hydro and natural gas replace the lion's share of oil based fuel, hurricanes and speculators won't be affecting prices so much. And the greater mix of fuel sources we have and can use the less manipulation can be done.

If it is anywhere near as bad as Katrina; those mobile homes are ready this time. Get those formaldehyde fans at WalMart on the trucks..

krucker, YES Canada celebrates labour day as well. On Monday.. this is our long weekend.. hence the huge jump in prices.

This morning CIBC is predicting $1.75/L (That's roughly $6.60 per GALLON) if Gustav is as bad as Katrina.

More likely the Labor Day weekend then Hurricanes or Tropical Storms.

I got a question!!!..........Why is $ per litre and Labor Day discussed in the same article? Does Canada celibrate Labor Day as well?

Nothing really amazing about it. We have been dealing with it for quite a long time. We are just more sensative to it.

Great idea BRUNO44. Most of us americans are lazy and wait last minute to do everything, at least in N.Y anyway.

Guys: you might try our plan: before gas prices rise for a big travel holiday or weekend, I take all of my 5 gallon gas containers and fill them, and we use that gas during the price jump days. Over last number of years, it has saved us a lot of money, especially here in Post, TX where all the stations have same price and try to stay at least 20 cents per gallon higher than Lubbock, TX.

Yesterday morning the PetroCan at Aldersyde was 123.9/L.

This morning it's jumped a dime to 133.9/L! Everyone else in the area's only jumped from 126.9 to 132.9.

Absolutely ludicrous!

Well, gas prices have gone up .11 in Northeast, PA.
I'm afraid that the prices will go up more because of the hurricane.
